Ta-Kheru: The life of an Ancient Egypt woman
This morning we ventured into Aberdeen to visitTa Kheru: Discovering the life of an Ancient Egyptian woman, a small but perfectly formed exhibition mounted by the University of Aberdeen.
The exhibition is centred on the ceremonially mummified remains of an old woman called Ta-Kheru ("The Syrian") who lived in Thebes. Ta-Kheru has been in the University collections since the early 1800s.
Using CT scans the curators have produced an enormously impressive holographic display which floats and rotates in mid-air as the coffin opens, the mummy emerges and the layers of linen wrapping and flesh are stripped away exposing the beautifully preserved skeleton.
This was the most impressive thing that I have seen in a long, long while. Well done, all involved.
The photograph is a montage of shots from the holographic display.
