Reeve's Muntjac
Another day with J and L, including a trip to Banbury for essential supplies and to view the fine half-timbered houses (some with pargetting!) and to marvel at the pissed squirrels (see Meles!)
A cold but clear day, with gorgeous light. After lunch I went out for a wander to enjoy the last of it, and spotted this Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi), the first I've seen in the wild, though now become pretty common in the S of England.
They are Chinese, originally, introduced as decorative creatures on posh estates and now escaped and spreading fast. I don't think they are much of a problem, ecologically, though.
Tiny wee things (about 50 cm/ 20 inches) at the shoulder; in embiggified mode you might just be able to make out that they have canine tusks (and I have no idea why he's doing that ridiculous thing with his tongue, unless it's just that he prefers Canons to Nikons and is taking the piss....) Only the males have the wee antlers, which never get bigger than this.
