Acorn Woodpecker
We spent the day at Elkhorn Slough Reserve, a tidal estuary on Monterey Bay. Lots of birds, but the acorn woodpecker is a first for me. The easy identifier is that white circle around his eye. Their habitat is a grove of decaying trees at the edge of the water. I got excited to see one bird, then Mr S said there was another, pretty soon we saw five, spaced up and down the tall snag. There was another flock further on. Never dreamed I'd see so many woodpeckers in one place. It was ExtraDays' birthday--a lovely warm day, perfect to be by the water, walking with friends.
