One Hundred Years
Today I was invited to join the march from the Pankhurst Centre to the unveiling of the new Emmeline Pankhurst statue in St Peter's Square.
The unveiling of the statue coincided with the 100 year anniversary of women receiving the right to vote (but only for those that were over 30 and house owners).
Standing in the march waiting for 1000 school children to join us as they chanted 'we want the vote' and 'deeds not words' was certainly something to see - and hear.
It was a wonderful day and for me the one that brought the tears was listening to the Equality Minister speak about being on a tram and hearing a 5 year old girl tell her mum all about the suffragettes and the importance of women fighting for the vote.
The only female statue in Manchester is that of Queen Victoria, so this is well overdue!
Quote for today:
I would rather be a rebel than a slave.
