First class home again

I hit 'peak flu' in the middle of the night. My poor mother was so worried about me that she came into my bedroom three times in the early hours, just to be certain that I was still breathing. Since my father died last week she has remarked that she feels like she is acting out a role in a film rather than living her own life. When she repeated this again in the night I kept to myself the notion that the plot would transform into a Victorian melodrama if she were to lose me so soon after her husband!

My mother wondered whether we should call the doctor, but I have had flu four times in my life before* (last July, August 2017, March 2003, and November 1989) and calculated that I would turn the corner some time today. I was right. I got up at midday, managed a bowl of soup and half a sandwich, completed a couple of the admin tasks that my middle sister had left for me earlier in the week, then packed my bags for my return journey to Edinburgh.

My not-so-little sister arrived mid-afternoon to take over Mummy-watching until I return next weekend. She also drove me to the station to catch the first of my two trains home.

When I booked my train ticket for the Newcastle-Edinburgh leg of the journey earlier this week I spotted that first class travel was only a little more expensive than second. Mr hazelh remarked that if I drank two G&Ts on the train, then that would cover the difference in the ticket prices. Unfortunately I am not really in the mood/fit state for G&T (or any alcohol for that matter), but I did enjoy a dinner of roast lamb and dumplings on the train.

It's great to be home again with Mr hazelh. He's coughing a little and I worry that he may be a flu time bomb. However, we are both determined to enjoy the weekend. We're having a few people over tomorrow night for a (smaller than usual) Christmas drinks party, so that's my motivation to speed my recovery. I'm still a bit weak and coughing, but should be well enough to get up at a normal time tomorrow and socialise in the evening (perhaps with a nap in the afternoon).

*Given that three of those times have been in the past 18 months, I am going to enquire about the flu vaccination. I expect that I am probably too late for this year, but I will be prepared for 2019/2020.

Exercise today: none other than a tiny amount of walking (5847 steps).
