The Very Rear Admiral
Following a fairly standard, if home grown "48 hours in Tallinn", we had need to cross to the wrong side of the tracks, quite literally, to Kalamaja. First stop, the Telliskivi creative centre, which means cafes and boutiques and murals in run down old Brezhnev era factory offices and buildings. Pretty cool, actually. Onward through streets of clapperboard houses to Lennusadam - yes, yes! The most magnificent home of the seaplane collection. And there’s a submarine built in Barrow in 1938 to explore, biplanes to fly in simulators, and Russian helicopters to machine gun. And when you tire of that (like that could ever happen) nautical uniforms to try on.
I had to be dragged away - though we did briefly stop at the harbour to see the world’s largest intact (?) steam icebreaker. To be truthful, the icy wind gusting off the Gulf of Finland didn’t encourage hanging about.
So, back to town, a warm up, and a final traditional meal of fish and chips. All too short. The holiday. Not the fish, or the chips. They were regular, like myself.
