Chilly & damp.

Spent the day as a volunteer in my local infant school. Spoke to one of the younger male teachers, who has a new baby. It had been a long day - 'There must be easier ways to earn £25 grand'.

Thats not much of a reward for teaching a bunch of 30 6-7 year olds how to read, understand numbers and become socialised. In a class of 30 where about 4 do not have english as a first language, and another four have a diagnosed or undiagnosed behavioural / learning issue. And you have to be positive, polite, encouraging .....

In addition to trying to convince parents that listening to their child read is a central part of their education, labelling socks, coats and PE kit would save hours, if not days of teaching time every year, and mountains of form filling & paperwork.

Its only since spending a day a week as a volunteer in the classroom that I've really understood what a demanding role it is.
