Cadiz for lunch
"To reach a port we must sail, sometimes with the wind, and sometimes against it. But we must not drift or lie at anchor."
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
A day away to Cadiz on the coast for our second day of the holiday. The last time I visited it was Easter and the streets and Cathedral were heaving with locals and tourists alike. Today promises to be a more sedate affair, starting with a train journey from Santa Justa station, less than ten minutes walk from our apartment through the quiet streets of Seville. They weren't so quiet at 3am though, with bin collections making enough noise to raise the dead. Pacified by delicious Seville oranges for breakfast I'm looking forward to our day trip.
We've booked to join an "almost free" two hour walking tour of the city, but we have to leg it across to the old city from the station as we only have ten minutes to get there. Our guide is a very entertaining young local who gives us plenty of background on the old city, taking us through the museum and Roman amphitheatre (which we missed on our last visit) before giving us a few suggestions for lunch and where to explore afterwards. It's surprising how quickly two hours passes.
K2 finds a restaurant at the far end of the old city, not far from the castle Santa Catalina, which is pencilled in for a visit. Amazing sea bass for lunch, probably tastes all the better for being eaten outdoors within scent of the sea. Our afternoon quickly passes with a visit to castle Santa Catalina and the Botanical Park and Garden along the sea wall. Our return walk through the city takes a few twists and turns en route to the station, with new plazas and streetscapes opening up around every corner. Made it back just in time. Very impressed with the trains and the service, very comfortable and relaxed journey back to Seville. Another visit to the bakery to get something for breakfast and an introduction to "Bananagrams", a word game similar to scrabble but more fun. Heisenberg is still uncertain.
