Life from city to village

The Churchyard

I had no meetings today, so went for a walk at lunchtime. I was aiming for the sandwich shop, and then decided to go on a couple of buildings further to the churchyard. There are some interesting graves. Two were of this nature, clearly from the first world war. I was interested by the symbolism in the carvings, and what they could mean. Then I was struck by the tremendous loss, 20 years old - barely starting out, and he was dead in the first year of the war.

Not sure what the star in the carving means.
