Kaitiaki; the guardian
Kaitiaki is Maori for the concept of guardianship, of the land, the air, and the waters (rivers and seas), as well as of the people. This sculpture by Fred Graham was erected in 2004. He wrote that the actions of the children of kaitiaki are seen as threatening by questioning the established order, and he offered the sculpture as a symbol in support.
I have blipped this sculpture twice before, both times in 2011 (15 February and 11 November). On the latter occasion, I included the following:
Kaitiaki is a term for the Maori concept of guardianship, for the sky, the sea, and the land. A kaitiaki is a guardian, and the process and practices of looking after the environment are referred to as kaitiakitanga. Increasingly within New Zealand kaitiaki encompasses trusteeship and guardianship in many public service settings.
