Frame

She used to make a reasonable living buying old pictures for their frames. She said that people would look at a painting and if they didn’t like it, they wouldn’t buy it. But she didn’t look at the paintings, just the frames. She used to sell the frames to the galleries near SoHo.

I suppose it’s possible that she might have thrown away some really valuable painting so that she could use its frame. But I doubt it. She was a pretty smart cookie.
