Flax Flowers

The flaxes in my garden are flowering at present. They usually have 5 or 6 flower stems, but this season there are over 30. Some of the stems are 3 metres tall. Each stem has dozens of flowers and buds. This shot is a close-up of a cluster.

The flowers have a lot of nectar, attracting native nectar eating birds, such as waxeyes and bellbirds. With leaves on the trees now I rarely see the waxeyes, but when I do catch a glimpse of one it will have a bright orange head from flax pollen.

Today was hot, just over 31ºC at the peak. The warm nor’wester made it feel hotter.
