Why is baby Jesus on a plate?

So my parents and I sometimes walked to the town square on Christmas Eve to see the nativity. Apparently the first time we did this I looked at the scene in this picture (note still the same figures!!!) and asked “why is baby Jesus on a plate?” I don’t think I got a satisfactory answer then so blipland.......over to you!!
