Hope in Winter

I just spotted this hellebore flowering in the garden today while pruning. For once, it had turned its face up instead of hanging it in shame as they usually seem to do. Why, I cannot fathom. Why have exquisite colour and pattern if only the worms and passing slugs can see it?
