my mother

My mother came from the fishing village of Scheveningen, the Netherlands. She wore traditional costume until after I was born in 1947. My mother died February 2011. She was almost eighty-eight years old.

The doll, also dressed in the traditional costume of Scheveningen, belonged to my mother.

I was the first child. As a child I walked daily with my mother along the boulevard and the beach in Scheveningen until I was four years old. Then we moved into the city of The Hague. September 1956 we immigrated to Canada. And at the end of her life I sat with her until her last breath. Her and I were on a journey.

This is a glimpse into what was and is no longer.
