- since the Civil War (17th century variety) it has also been nicknamed Oliver's (i e Oliver Cromwell's) Battery.  If cannons were sited here, I find it difficult to imagine them inflicting any significant damage on the castle during a siege.

The damage was inflicted in 1645 when the castle was slighted by order of Parliament.
