Cold

Sometimes when I finish a book, the characters have been portrayed so well and I feel so invested in them, that it is almost like a loss. We all know how Scott’s Antarctic expedition ends, but Beryl Bainbridge brings five members of that expedition to life at different stages of their fateful journey. The penultimate chapter immersed me in a particular event so thoroughly that I almost felt exhausted by it myself and possibly a tad frost bitten too. Why did I not discover this wonderful book sooner?
