Parent and chick

This morning we and the Tsukens went out west to Muriwai and the Takapu (Gannet) colony. A range from small down covered chicks to older adult birds. Many juvenile birds in a couple of the places in the colony. Where this adult and chick were, there were either similarly aged chicks or adults. None of the juveniles, which were elsewhere.

Shortly after this photo, the adult looked up and waved its wings energetically. It looked to me like a signal to the other parent. For a time nothing changed then this parent flew away, and a minute later either it returned or its mate returned. I didn't see any feeding occurring.
