Summer of 69...

....may have been a big hit for Bryan Adams but it obviously wasn’t one of my Dads best ones! As a keen gardener (when time permitted), in the early sixties he’d helped start the local leek club and remained secretary for many years. In the inaugural show of 1962 he’d come a credible fourth out of 58 entries...things went downhill from there with him awarded the wooden hammer in 1969 for the worst leek in the show!!

I think this may be the year the silly B he entrusted to water and feed his leeks whilst we were on holiday told him on our return that he hadn’t had to bother as it had rained all week!!

Dad obviously wasn’t silly enough to ask said person again as he never won another wooden hammer! This one is now proudly in my possession.
