The role of media

Today, we went to the Newseum -- a jewel of a place in D.C.  It's a testament to journalism in all its forms, throughout the ages. Its stated mission is to "is to increase public understanding of the importance of a free press and the First Amendment. Visitors experience the story of news, the role of a free press in major events in history, and how the core freedoms of the First Amendment — religion, speech, press, assembly and petition — apply to their lives." And it amply lives up to the mission.

It was refreshing to be steeped in an environment where media isn't "the enemy of the people" and I hope it serves as a helpful reminder to everyone...

I have several pix today: the main one is the corner dedicated to all the journalists who died performing their jobs; in the extras: the headline news from papers across the country the day after 9/11; a father-son watching a sequence of major recent news items; and to finish off, a figure caught in a little space of light at the 'students activists during civil rights' exhibit.
