Another Book and an Empty Cup!
It's half-past-four and it's been sleeting all day! I did manage a trip to LIdls for essentials like biscuits and chocolates - oh, and a bottle of milk☺ Another bookish sort of day - mainly with 'Liebe Anne: Ein Buch für Anne Frank’ ('Dear Anne: A Book for Anne Frank'). It is a book compiled of writings by children from the ages of 10 to 16 years. The Anne Frank Zentrum in Berlin had invited children to write something with Anne Frank in mind. The result is an collection of letters to Anne, poems, little stories - it is an amazing insight into the minds of children of that age, and also a great tribute to the memory of Anne Frank. One line on p.27 reflects the puzzlement of many when in a letter to Anne a 14-year old girl writes ‘Wie konnten die Menschen damals nur so grausam sein’ (roughly translated as ‘How can humans be so cruel’). I bought the book in the Buchenwald bookshop during one of my many visits to the concentration camp near Weimar, and today it’s my reading for Holocaust Memorial Day, and in memory of my good friend Sonia (who sadly passed away a few years ago) who came to England with her brother as part of the Kindertransport scheme - they never saw their parents again. here's my entry for last year!
