Wicksteed's Park origins
Charles Wicksteed, engineer and inventor, was the founder of the UK mainland's first theme park. He bought the land in 1913 with the intention of building a model village and a lake was dug, mainly by hand, in 1916/17. After WW1 he changed his mind and decided to build a park for leisure time. His belief was that all children no matter how rich or poor, should have somewhere fun and safe to play outdoors. Using bits and pieces from his engineering business he designed swings and slides and in 1931 opened a railway that is still a firm favourite with visitors today. Probably as a result of his successful leisure project his business eventually exported to over 80 countries worldwide.
