Origin of art

The first known image humans created were of hands-some 40,000 years ago in Indonesia.

This image was made on the kitchen table tonight using flour.
 
The point is that there is something basic in human nature that craves to make marks, to leave behind a trace, something to say:” I was here”.
 
Antony Gormley’s brilliant documentary
“How Art Began” on BBC2 the other night explored these issues in depth.
