Yellow Mellow
I finally spoke to the staff nurse at 4am this morning. Lovely nurse. Dad was asleep. Under hourly observation. She advised that he couldn’t communicate or open his eyes and had lost movement in right arm. CT results were ok. They were planning on MRI. She understood my location and my sisters. Whilst she can’t stop us from visiting Dad, she kindly advised that there wasn’t a lot we could do as they were still assessing him and I would probably be better to wait until the consultant had visited at 9am and to call back about 11am. Dad was 4th on his list...they have 5 beds. He’s in the Acute ward.
I called at 11:30am...spoke to staff nurse Sam. She was slightly stroppy to begin with and I understand why. Her opening statement was the best....she started with ‘you could be anyone’ and ‘you could be someone who wants financial gain from the information’. I repeated to her that I’m Tony’s daughter, I have Power of Attorney and will happily provide a copy when I visit or she could call the GP for confirmation. I confirmed I would happily provide passwords but seeing as I had spent hours even trying to locate my Dad I would welcome some sort of reassurances / update to his well-being, even if that meant certain information was withheld. I do understand and expected it. I explained the situation of my location and my sister. She softened and she opened up. Dad has failed sip tests, means he can’t swallow. We’ve discussed a feeding tube and what dads wishes are / may have been to have or not to have and the consequences. MRI is to take place. He still can’t talk. He will open his eyes. He can’t move his right arm. We talked about do not resuscitate (dnr) and dads wishes. She is making an exception for me to be on the ward at 9am tomorrow so that I can meet the consultant. We will be doing a feeding tube. Dad has always stated that he never wants to be resuscitated. So until tomorrow. Scunthorpe here I came armed with health and welfare power of attorney and a big hug for my dad! Wonder what I am about to walk into....
