Valentia island day 2
An astonishing day with mad colours, wild weather and a huge variety of stuff to enjoy. I've chosen this image just for its sheer astonishment value. A slate quarry on Valentia Island and look closely - high up there is a grotto with an illuminated Mary and St Bernadette. The water falling down is all part of it for it collects in a huge pool, no longer accessible. Even more astonishing, and no longer accessible, behind the railings is a pelican! A rather strange specimen at that. (see extra) WTF one might ask? Then a dim dawning - ah yes, the pelican - plucked at its own breast and fed its blood to the young, Jesus sacrificing himself for man.
An action packed day today in Alpine sunshine, perishing but we enjoyed a tour of a church with an expert; viewed Ogham stones; numerous wells in highly obscure places; started climbing up a sacred mountain complete with stations of the cross all the way up to its snowy top ( we got as far as number 2, there are 14 and it was a very big mountain; ate some very welcome soup in Portmagee where the Star Wars film crew had stayed when filming at nearby Skellig Michael; marvelled at the old Barracks in Cahirciveen designed to look like an Austrian schloss (why??) ; gasped at a piece of rock art found lurking in a muddy field, and were treated to a fabulous sunset as we wend our way back to the hotel. Phew!
