Applying the Theory
The last day before two days of exams start.
The best time to get of the library and apply some of the theory I have been revising for social research methods!
First stop: Coop Brunch
Used my participant observation and participatory observation skills to do inductive research into social relations during the last Sunday brunch of 2012.
Second stop: The Kingston Ice-Rink
Some ethnographic research at the ice-rink at City Hall. Observed and participated into Canadian-style ice-skating. Definitely took the form of prolonged engagement, as we skated for 1.5 hours. Main conclusion after careful analysis of the data: the Canadian are a bit rougher than the Dutch.
Third stop: Hot Chocolate Place
More participatory observation and unstructured interviews into the traditions concerning after ice-skating rituals. Adopted a feminist methodology to engage with 'the other' and overcome the research-participant power imbalance.
In other words
Today, instead of studying for my social research methods exams I stayed at coop brunch for 2.5, went ice-skating at the ice-rink and had a lovely hot chocolate with friends :). The perfect last Sunday of 2012 in Kingston :)
