Tillicoultry clock tower
Lovely crisp sunny day today, found myself in Tillicoultry admiring the pink stone of the clock tower against the blue sky.
The tower was built in 1879 as an addition to Tillicoultry town hall at a cost of £1500.
The town hall was also used as a picture house with the first film shown in 1913 and the first "talkie" in 1931. Despite residents recalling the queues round the building when Bill Haley's "Rock around the clock" was screened, the picture house showed its last film in 1960. The town hall was demolished in the mid 1980s.
The clock stopped chiming in the 1990s following a dispute over the safety of the new caretaker climbing the internal ladder to wind up the clock. The tower has fallen into disrepair, hence the fencing round the base.
Tillicoultry community is now campaigning to save the tower - hope they succeed, it is a handsome addition to the Tilly skyline
