Holroyd's Former Art Gallery

The history of this sad-looking closed Art Gallery on the corner of High Street and George Street goes back to 1972 when Jack Holroyd joined the family business and began buying art at auction. He would reframe paintings and return to auction any that he did not sell. The business expanded to include a framing service for the public and the trade. Holroyd's Gallery has moved to North Ballachulish in the Highlands where they specialise in paintings with a Scottish landcape or wildlife theme. The High Street building has been abandoned for several years with street-level windows and door now boarded up.
The block accommodates a couple of small fast food outlets, a wee butcher's shop and supposedly, Glasgow's oldest pub - the College Bar. Everything has a run-down look that contrasts starkly with the landscaped brand-new student accommodation complex across the road. On the extreme left of the picture at 215 High Street is the red sandstone building -    once the British Linen Bank built in 1895 (featured on Blipfoto 25th January). It would be great if Holroyd's old premises could be restored with a gallery/cafe function that could served the University and local community.
