Birnbeck pier from Brean Down

For a change we nipped down to Brean Down today. A taxing climb up the zig-zag stairs to the down (Brean Down is a promontory off the Bristol Channel and stands about 100m above the sea. When you can see the sea.) and a potter about on the top, taking in the c17th fort at the end.

The day was overcast but at least warmer than recently. This shot shows the only pier in Britain to link the mainland to an island; Birnbeck Pier. Highly derelict and on the 'at risk' register, it is testament to the ingenuity of the Victorians and the apathy of today.

Imagine. A bridge connecting mainland Europe to island Britain... You can see them now, if you look large, tiny minded politicians scurrying over the pier like rats, looking for the best place to set the charges. And we don't mean tolls. No free movement onto our bit of mud!

Gods, how easily everything resolves down to bloody Brexit nowadays. Still, at least I don't live in Grantham. I'm sure that'll get blipped in the end too. Perhaps they should have kept it back, so that it could be erected in a more appropriate location.
