Biggest in the World
On it's first visit to the UK the worlds largest container ship docked in the Port of Southampton yesterday and departed past the Island this afternoon. This monster has been described as the biggest moving man made object on the sea and is 1300ft long and 177 ft wide or the size of four football pitches. it holds 16,000 containers and has just one engine producing 110,000 hp. It is manned by a crew of just 27.
She left southampton at 3 PM but by the time she passed by close to the Isle of Wight it was pitch dark so I had to crank up the ISO to 3600. I couldn't see to focus but the D800 made a fairly good job albeit rather grainy. Although not a brilliant picture I think it gives some idea of the size of the ship .
The news reports have said that the next generation will be even larger! Southampton harbour is to be dredged of half a million tonnes of material to enable them to berth so they could soon be a common sight in the Solent.
