During a very muddy walk beside the River Tweed we walked below the partially ruined Neidpath Castle. Originally it was built in the 14th century replacing an earlier castle but then was attacked by Cromwell’s troops and subsequently partly repaired. Today it is inhabited and although it is not open to the public it can be used for weddings and other events.
I have been taking photos of places connected with Mary Queen of Scots and discovered that she stayed there as a 21 year old in 1563. Pictures can be seen here of her room.
Apparently there is a ghost! The Maiden of Neidpath fell in love with a man of whom her father disapproved and pined away becoming so emaciated that her father relented. Unfortunately as she waited on the ramparts for her beloved he rode past as he didn’t recognise her and she died of a broken heart. Sometimes she can be seen still hoping for him to return!
