St Enoch Clock
My very tenuous link with the mono Monday theme of Pinch is that this clock could be said to have been pinched (and rescued) from that horrible Dr Beeching who closed so much of our rail network.
It was originally located in St Enoch Station, Glasgow from the late 19th Century. The station was modelled on St Pancras in London. But Dr Beeching used his favourite word - "axed" - and St Enoch together with Buchanan St were the 2 main stations in Glasgow to close in the 1960s. I won't say anything else about the Beeching cuts other than the fact that he gets a very deserved and prominent place in a book I have which is titled "50 people who buggered up Britain". I can think of a few who may be getting added to that list very shortly!
So this massive clock was rescued and donated to the new Town of Cumbernauld in the 1970s. And some Blippers may recognise it from the movie Gregory's Girl - a meeting place for Gregory going on a date.
The problem with it now is that its on a corridor which links the old and new parts of the shopping malls, but is currently closed to the public so they don't get to see it! Apparently this is due to the common problem of shop closures and a section of the centre now having no shops at all so the link corridor just isn't required. Hopefully they can resolve that and get it accessible by the public again especially as it is working and telling the right time which wasn't always the case.
