Pink house in the harbour

We went into Folkestone just to see a place we have never been to. It's a town with a long and turbulent history. A fishing village and smuggling centre, then in Victorian times a busy cross-Channel ferry port and upmarket resort. The Channel Tunnel and then in 2000 the curtailment of the ferry service to Bologne both hit Folkestone very hard. In recent years there has been a huge effort to bring it back to life, especially as a creative hub. 

So, here is the harbour, split in two by a now defunct railway viaduct, and feeling peaceful, with just a few fishing boats bobbing about. Small scale fishing still takes place and we were able to buy fish, but it is not like it used to be. A good place for a wander in the sunshine though and we joined quite a few people doing just that.

The pink house in the water is one of six spread about the town. They were made by artist Richard Woods and installed during the Folkestone Triennial in 2017. They were to provide a message about the housing crisis.
