Library ladies

These are my former colleagues, Christina and Marie, in Drymen Library.

Marie has worked there since the library opened in 1979, a gift to the village from Sir Hugh Fraser, who lived locally, and we worked together for 24 years. She has decided to retire next April and will be sorely missed by users of the library.

Christina was our Saturday assistant for over a year until I retired in 2011, when she got my position as library assistant. Always pleasant and helpful, she became a popular figure with the readers in no time at all.

In these austere times of cutbacks, it is always a concern that the library service may be under threat, as it has already suffered up and down the country. We can but hope that the high heid yins in the council realise what an important role the libraries play in rural communities.
