Deal pier café
Deal pier was built in 1957 and although it might have won awards then it isn't as attractive as the old Victorian piers - it's a long concrete walkway to a café which did win awards when it was rebuilt in 2009.
The last time I went in the cafe it was no great shakes - in fact it was pretty dire - but it's just reopened and I thought it worth a look. They also sell Swedish buns made by a local Swedish baker - see a shot of one in the extras. When the new people took over and refurbished the café it wasn't without difficulties; the local paper covered the announcement of their taking the business and the previous owner was active in the comments. It was well worth the trip - the service is excellent and the food wonderful.
A brief walk round the café before heading back to the car and I spotted this guy working on the lower deck - it is being refurbished so that the anglers can use it again. You might be able to see the crowbar in his hand and before I could get my phone lined up to take the shot he'd been standing with his back to the water, straddling the slot you can see by his feet, and trying to loosen something using the crowbar. Now I'm no fan of "health & safety gone mad" but I'd have though that a safety harness and a life-jacket might have been of use here - a colleague working further round, and on the right side of the fence, was wearing a life-jacket. This isn't one of those shots where another level below him is hidden - from there the next thing he'd hit would be the English Channel. Still, he's a grown up so he can make his own decisions...........
