Stone Soup
Caldo de Piedra (Stone Soup) was so unique, I wish I could show the whole process! The restaurant served only one thing...soup with tortillas. The broth , which was made with herbs grown onsite , was put with uncooked shrimp and fish into these gourd bowls . There was a brick fireplace at the side with a wood fire and rocks about the size of baseballs. When the rocks were red hot, the young man (only men are allowed to do this) reached into the fire with a long tongs, picked up a rock and put it into a bowl of soup. The broth was instantly boiling, which cooked the shrimp and fish. The rocks are left in the bowls to keep the soup hot.
A woman was making fresh tortillas and cooking them on another wood fire . Tortillas are cooked on a comal, which is a large, round ceramic platter.
An absolutely delicious meal!
