Now that AI has finished and the bulls are out with the cows, we have changed our milking regime. Instead of milking twice a day, we now milk the cows 3 times every 2 days. So today, the cows were milked at 5.15am, and tonight at 7pm, then tomorrow they will be milked at 11am. There are several reasons why we change to this regime 1. When the ground starts to get dry, changing the milking times slows down the grazing round; 2. You aren't milking in the heat of the afternoon, with the cows standing in the cowshed yard getting very hot; 3. The cows end up with better body condition as they are only being milked three times instead of four; and 4. Farmerboy gets to sleep in every second morning - yipee!!
I milked tonight and I have to say how pleasant it was milking in the cool of the evening instead of the heat of the afternoon. While the cows were a bit confused about why they weren't milked at the normal time, it doesn't take them long to get use to the new milking times.
I took this photo tonight at 9pm when I was going to lock the cows into their paddock after milking. Up the top of the valley looked very cloudy and dark, almost like it could rain, while down at our end we had a bit of dark cloud, but also this lovely red cloud when the sun was setting.
