The Bridge of Remembrance
This is one of two major war memorials in Christchurch that commemorate the sacrifice made by brave men and women in conflict since the Great War of 1914-1918. Opened on Armistice Day 1924 (November 11) originally as a road thoroughfare linking Cashel St between Oxford and Cambridge Terraces , it has since been pedestrianised. Fittingly it was reopened in its current precinct form on Anzac Day (25 April) by Capt. C H Upham, VC and bar (the only New Zealander to win the Victoria Cross for Gallatry twice).
The bridge and its archway feature memorials that recognise the service of New Zealanders in two World Wars and subsequent conflicts in Korea, Malaya, Borneo, and Vietnam.
Currently the bridge is still closed for repairs following the February 2011 earthquake. Somehow looking at it through chainlink fence just does not seem right, so I ducked down to the banks of the Avon to grab this blip instead.
