Emsworthy Farm

I was going to come here yesterday but these lovely mossy boulders need some sun to make them look good. It's been a beautiful day today so I went up that way.

You might note that this old barn is built of granite as are the miles of drystone walls all around. There's plenty of it lying around. There was a farm here in medieval times and many of the rocks have come from the old farmhouse as it collapsed. The buildings were abandoned in the 1870s but the barn remains standing probably because it was built later than the other buildings and maybe because it's been maintained by a succession of farmers who use the land.

You may realise that this is the red-roofed barn so frequently featured in the many photos of the bluebells that grow so prolifically round here.
