Waterfalls and Wallabies
A day of motoring on across the Atherton Tablelands at a leisurely pace. We’re only loitering here on our way to the Whitsunday Islands as the area south of here was well washed out a couple of weeks back. And what a bonus it’s proving - I mean back home I may have looked at a waterfall from time to time, but don’t ever recall being able to recreate the Timotei Shampoo commercial with such accuracy. Well, Timotei Platinum perhaps... isn’t that a thing? And the third set of falls we visited (Ellinjaa Falls) you could swim through the falls and into the space under the overhanging rocks with the water roaring and the air blasting all around. What a gas. And again, the place was totally deserted.
Down the Palmerston Highway and to Mission Beach where we’ve another cabin (sorry, boutique bungalow). The lovely couple running the place were delighted to welcome us, their only guests; seems times are a bit tough in the trade at the moment. Lovely but they’re on their mobile full time as they run the local animal rescue. Last week they had 23 wallabies in various stages of recovery hopping about and they’ve an 80 year old turtle in a tank for release in the next week.
Reminds me of a sign we saw on a tiny corrugated iron bus shelter where the rainforest was at its deepest up north - lost cat, it said.
After a relax by their dipping pool we walked down to the huge deserted beach and then on to the Spicy Thai Hut - superb. The guy said sorry we don’t have a licence, but pointed to some lights along the dark road - that’s a bottle shop just there. What a great country, so it is.
