Fen sunset
Pete and I spent the afternoon with Molly who seemed to be feeling her age, having had another nasty fall earlier in the week. She's now physically frail, and had several episodes of breathlessness while we were there, which were distressing. However, she still has her wits, and enjoyed the conversation and hearing how her grandchildren were getting on. She was very surprised when we told her Chris and Lizzy were going to get married in Cyprus in April 2020.
We left just before sunset, and decided to drive back along the Welland. The sunset was stunning, but I couldn't find anywhere safe to stop on the narrow fen roads - by the time I did, the sun had dropped below the horizon. This area is very intensively farmed, but as we drove past a pond we spotted four roe deer visiting it for a drink. The river and ditch banks seem to provide sufficient habitat for this species, and for many others such as kestrel and barn owl that are probably more plentiful locally than in many other parts of the country.
In the evening we went out to a pizzeria in Yaxley with some of our neighbours. The pizzas were freshly made, wood-fired, delicious and reasonably priced too. It made for a very jolly evening - a good way of banishing any winter blues.
