Floating fern.....

.....commonly known as Pacific Azolla, scientifically Azolla Filiculoides.

Located on slow moving streams, lakes and ponds throughout the North Island and eastern parts of the South Island. It's green for most of the year but in the heat of summer forms a lovely red carpet. Whenever I see it I catch my breath as it contrasts beautifully with the dry landscape especially on a hot sunny day like today.
