On and off attempts to fix the laptop and get it back to normal rather than limping along in 'safe mode with networking'. Apparently the 'white screen of death' situation can be remedied but I've not found anything that's worked yet. Limited functionality may be not be the worst scenario in the grand scheme of things but it's not exactly what I'd call ideal. Perhaps if I head out for a bike ride in the morning, a solution will come to me in Damascene fashion.
