Makes Me Wanna Dance
This is the main hallway in our local community center, a former elementary school downtown that serves as a sometime art gallery, performance space, meeting hall, classroom, teen center and senior lunch venue. I may have left something out. There is a lot of foot traffic through this corridor. The joyful mandala umbrellas, painted by middle school kids, are the brainchild of Miss C, the best art teacher ever. She unfailingly comes up with a new project every year to engage her sixth and seventh graders and provide an art experience for the entire community. Permanent installations include mosaics that students have created on the bridges over the San Lorenzo river, and on forgotten walls and staircases all over town. Her next amazing endeavor is "Watsonville Brillante", a 12,000 foot mosaic completely covering a six-story concrete parking garage. She will involve students, local artists and other members of the community to create this piece over a five year period, at an estimated cost of $1.5 million dollars, which she has nearly already raised in donations. Her energy takes my breath away.
The Extra is shows more detail of the art pieces.
