On the terraces
Went to Park View Road to watch Welling United play St Albans City in a National League South match.
I normally follow Crewe Alexandra, but that's a long trek from London so I now tend to watch them when they play closer to the capital (but will be heading to Gresty Road in two weeks time). My friend and fellow Crewe fan, Matt, originally from St Alban's, suggested a trip to Welling instead.
Watching lower league football made for an enjoyable afternoon. It's a throwback to the old days of watching football, standing on uncovered concrete terraces, with the edge of the pitch just a couple of yards from the touchline. Beers could be brought from the bar onto the terraces, and supporters could swap ends at half-time.
There was some Crewe interest, however. French defender Thierry Audel, once at Crewe (he played just five games for the club) is now on Welling's books. I grabbed a photo of him to update his Wikipedia profile.
