H.M.Bark Endeavour 1764-1778
Built at Thomas Fishburn shipyard Whitby 1764 as collier "Earl of Pembroke". As "HMS Endeavour" she was commanded by Lt James Cook on his first expedition to Tahiti New Zealand and Australia 1768 to 1771. Captain Cook was killed in Hawaii 1779 while on his third expedition
After further service in the RN from 1771 in the South Atlantic provisioning the Falkland Islands the former Whitby collier served as "Lord Sandwich" a troop carrier then prison ship in the American wars before being scuttled as a blockship at Newport Rhode Island in 1778.
She had a short but exciting life. She would likely have lasted into the 19thC if she had remained as a collier carrying coal from Newcastle to London as did many others built in the heydays of shipbuilding in Whitby
