His last pint
I was in Bolton this morning to pick up my suit jacket which now has the perfect length sleeves.
The Ye Olde Wench & Trinkets (whose door has certainly seen better days) and its neighbouring pub, Ye Olde Man & Scythe, really caught my eye. I can just imagine the history that has taken place inside those walls.
The plaque on the wall of the pub reads "In this ancient hostelry James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby passed his last few hours of his life previous to his execution Wed. 15th Oct. 1651".
The earliest recorded mention of the pub is in 1251 making it one of the ten oldest public houses in Britain, and the oldest in Bolton. It has been rebuilt at least once (in 1636 according to the datestone) and only the vaulted cellar and some internal beams of the original structure remain. It is a Grade II listed building.
We have rather an eclectic mix of songs to practise at choir tonight, from Bruno Mars Up Town Funk, Someday from the Hunchback of Notredame to Queen's We Will Rock You. It's a while since we last signed them so I hope it all comes flooding back and my fingers remember what to do.
Quote for today:
The spaces between your fingers were created so that another's could fill them in.
