Arma...what? (BackBlip)

One of Cumberland's wild inhabitants is the Nine-banded armadillo. They are quite plentiful on the Island and especially active dusk to dawn, but can be spotted all during the day. They are quite the little diggers, looking for their favorite foods such as insects, grubs and other invertebrates, they are not appreciated by those trying to grow veggies. They don't eat the plants, but dig them up looking for goodies to consume. Armadillos are fairly easy to photograph. They have very poor eyesight but a keen sense of smell. So as long as you stay downwind and approach quietly you can get a good shot. Armadillos are not 'native' to the Southeastern U.S., having come up from Central America into the south-central states, mostly Texas, and have extended their range as far east as North Carolina and south throughout Florida. I think that they are a fascinating little mammal. To read more about Armadillos LOOK HERE
