Maybe she’s mostly in her studio
with low slow jazz cooking
on the radio
or, when she’s delving deep,
allowing a violin concerto
to sway her choice
as to the blacks and blues
and dark purples she will use.
It could well be that the voices
of Nick Cave and Tom Waits
help guide her brush across a canvas
or their choice of chords indicates
the course her charcoal will travel
when she’s considering
where to draw the line.

It could be she’s an acquired taste
and says so herself.
She has friends
‘quite a few’
but not everyone ‘gets’ her.
Maybe we, too,
like so many,
look at her and picture
what is not true.
