Polaris

Polaris is embedded in the pavement on James Watt St in Glasgow. Probably goes back about 10 years when the area was renovated. Anyone any idea what the significance is? I tried google but it the only explanation that it was put there by a signage company doesn't make sense. The area historically held warehouses when the Clyde in Glasgow was busy with maritime commerce.
Anyway any thoughts much appreciated.
